Origins & tradition

A tradition rooted in Greco-Arab scholarship

The Canon of Medicine established principles of whole-person assessment that remain the foundation of Unani Tibb practice today, examining diet, temperament, environment, and lifestyle as interconnected factors in health.

Ibn Sina (Avicenna) · Canon of Medicine, 1025 CE

Unani Tibb, meaning "Greek medicine" in Arabic, draws on a healing tradition stretching back over 3,000 years, refined by Hippocrates and codified by Ibn Sina (Avicenna) in his Canon of Medicine, written in 1025 CE. It remains one of the world's oldest continuously practised medical systems, recognised by the World Health Organisation as a traditional medicine system.

The system is built on the concept of four temperaments and four humours, a framework for understanding how individual constitution, diet, and environment interact to produce health or illness. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, Unani Tibb seeks to restore balance across the whole person.

How it differs

vs. Conventional medicine

Conventional medicine focuses on diagnosing and treating named conditions. Unani Tibb assesses constitution, lifestyle, and environment to understand why the condition arose, and addresses those root factors.

vs. Ayurveda

Both systems share ancient roots and a whole-person philosophy. Unani Tibb is specifically rooted in the Greco-Arab scholarly tradition, Ibn Sina, Hippocrates, and the humoral framework, rather than the Sanskrit Vedic tradition of Ayurveda.

What is Unani Tibb medicine?

Unani Tibb is a Greco-Arab system of medicine with roots stretching back over 3,000 years, refined by Hippocrates and codified by Ibn Sina in the Canon of Medicine (1025 CE). It examines the relationship between diet, temperament, lifestyle, and environment to understand and address the root causes of illness rather than managing symptoms alone.

Where does Unani Tibb come from?

Unani Tibb's roots stretch back over 3,000 years, refined through ancient Greek medicine and developed into a comprehensive system by Islamic scholars, most notably Ibn Sina (Avicenna). The Canon of Medicine, written in 1025 CE, established principles that remained central to European and Asian medicine for centuries.

How does Unani Tibb differ from conventional medicine?

Conventional medicine focuses on diagnosing and treating named conditions. Unani Tibb assesses individual constitution, diet, lifestyle, and environment to understand why a condition has arisen, and works to restore balance across those factors rather than treating the symptom alone.

What does a Unani Tibb consultation involve?

A first consultation is 50 minutes. It includes a constitutional assessment, a review of diet, lifestyle, sleep, and stress levels, and a personalised plan using nutritional guidance and natural supplementation. Available in person at Bethnal Green or via video call UK-wide.
